this is starting to be the most depressing blog out there, eh? what with headers like this on! hehehe...
the bad news is rather just MORE bad news in relation to my chosen profession, music. check this out from Yahoo.
now, i would argue- and *have* been to any poor schmuck who, say, gets caught in a elevator with me or whatever- that music has been devalued in america for sometime. really for about 30 years or so. how, you may ask? well, by having music EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME, people naturally won't value something they get all the time. i mean, i'll be in some shitty store and over the bad p.a. will come some great song say like Nilsson's "everybody's talking." now, this is one of the best songs of all-time, really. and so poignant! but it loses all of it value to people cuz they've heard it a thousand times thanks to oldies stations and
and dept. stores, etc. i KNOW nobody really cares about his kind of stuff but me, but hell, that's what a personal blog is for, right?
by the way, i am thrilled the Pittsburgh Steelers are in the super bowl because i have been a fan since i was 6 years old and i love their running back, Jerome Bettis because he went to notre dame, my favorite college football team for all my life, and because he's such a cool guy. i hope they get "one for the thumb" for Jerome.
nothing much to report on the music front...except that i will soon have an announcement to let people know that soon ALL my songs will be on iTunes. it will soon be the ONLY place to get "Landlocked"as it's been out-of-print for a few years now and i'm not sure when it's gonna be re-issued at this point.
cheers,
kevin

***I care. And hell, as far as this report goes, I coulda told them that. The younger generation (and yes, I know how pompous and old-fartishthat sounds) doesn't appreciate music as anything other background noise. I'm not blaming them for it - it's the way music has been presented to them.
***Part of the problem is also that there are, to quote John Doe, "too many goddamn bands." Not just covering every style of music (which is a good thing), but multiple variants that basically sound like each other (a bad thing). Like all these neo new wave bands. There are probably a couple of really talented acts in the mish mash of Franz Bloc Bravery Killers, but with so many groups aping that sound, it all becomes indistinguishable white noise.
***An artist needs to take stock of his/her/its work before going public and ask him/her/itself: "Does the world really need this? Am I really that talented that I have something to say that's different from the other acts under this banner?"
***Like that'll happen.
***I'm a bit encouraged, though. My 3-year-old niece watched the Johnny Cash Live at Austin City Limits DVD and loved it. She listens to "Ring of Fire" constantly. She wants to get on stage and play ACL just like Johnny Cash. She already makes up her own songs and sings them to herself. Music's not gonna be just another commodity to this kid.
Michael
you are so right, michael. i don't blame the newer generations. it's not their fault at all. they've seen that music is just another disposible "commodity." hell, it IS just the baqckround to their life.
and as my friend, a record store owner once said, "puck has a lot to answer for." and that's REALLY unfashionable to say but damn true. i'm sorry, but not everyone CAN do it. and stop trying!! the thing that gets me to no end is that i am hearing the same punk-pop stuff that i've heard for the last 25 years. yet, i get intereviews and reviews that call MY music retro?
bah,humbug.
and that's nice to ehar about your niece but i DID learn one thing when i ran the other studio, and that is that there will always be a handful of kids in every generation who "get it." unfortunately, they're a small percentage...
